Malaysia Pledges One Watt of Solar Generation for Every Social Media Post on Green Growth

12 JUNE 2017, Astana, Kazakhstan - The Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Malaysia, Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, today announced that Malaysia is pledging to add one watt of solar generation for every one social media post that inspires Green Growth and helps to propagate #MyButterflyEffect throughout EXPO2017.

The Minister also invited his counterparts from the over 100 nations participating at EXPO 2017 to join the #MyButterflyEffect and pledged to generate one Watt of solar power in their own countries for every post during EXPO2017.

Minister Dr. Ongkili commented: “As an Emerging Market leader, Malaysia is in a position to inspire the world. We believe that a relatively small nation like Malaysia can inspire big changes in green growth on a global scale because, after all, green growth is in our nature. With the #MyButterflyEffect campaign and asking the simple question #Wattif, we have set in motion a Butterfly Effect that will hopefully result in a world powered by Future Energy.”

With Malaysia ranking number one as the most forested country among emerging markets, and the fourth most forested country in the world, the country is a natural home for green technology. In fact, Malaysia is now one of the world’s largest manufacturers of solar Photovoltaic modules and cells, coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively, with 4 of the world’s top 5 PV cell producers located in Malaysia.

The 1 Post = 1 Watt pledge is a call-to-action to all EXPO 2017 nations, participants and global citizens to share their Green Growth inspirations on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), amplifying the conversation about Future Energy. For every post during EXPO2017 with the hashtag #MyButterflyEffect, Malaysia will add one Watt of solar generation.

As an added incentive to Malaysians and Kazakhs, two of the most inspiring Green Growth posts from each country will win an all-expenses paid trip to EXPO 2017 to visit the Malaysia Pavilion and see for themselves just how impactful their singular, relatively small voice can be. The Malaysian contest ends on 10 July 2017, while the Kazakhstan contest, which requires posts to be in Kazakh language, ends on 30 July 2017.

The 1 Post = 1 Watt pledge, which runs throughout the duration of EXPO 2017 ending on 10 September 2017, is part of the #MyButterflyEffect campaign, one of the many programmes and activities organised by Malaysia during EXPO 2017 to showcase the nation’s emerging market leadership in Green Growth. The Malaysia Pavilion, which carries the theme of “Powering Green Growth”, is one of the largest pavilions at EXPO 2017.

Malaysia participation at EXPO 2017 is spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water and implemented by the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia).
